Inti Raymi Festival
Travel Itinerary
On June 24, the festival in honor of the Sun God – Inti Raymi, is held in the presence of the Inca, the Willaq Uma or High Priest, Tarpuntay, Wirapirikuq, and Kallparikuy, as well as the nobles and representatives of the panacas.
For this majestic celebration, three impressive historical and natural settings are used:
- Qorikancha (Enclosure of Gold): The main temple of Cusco dedicated to the Sun, where the golden garden is said to have been. Here the first rituals of the cult of the Apu Inti and Pacha Mama were performed.
- The Main Square (the ancient Auqaypata or Warrior's Square): In Inca times, this immense square was entirely used for the ceremony amidst the great USHNU (ceremonial platform).
- Saqsaywaman: It was the Royal House of the Sun and temple dedicated to Lightning. Here, since 1944, the central part of the contemporary Inti Raymi has taken place before an impressive crowd.
Itinerary: Inti Raymi (June 24)
07:30 am approx. Pick up from your hotel to walk to the Qorikancha temple.
09:00 am approx. Qorikancha: Start of the staging; in Inca times it was the main temple dedicated to the Sun.
11:00 am approx. Aucaypata (Main Square) Duration 45 minutes: The Inka and his Royal Court enter through Inti K’ijllu street to the Plaza de Armas of Cusco. We will appreciate the encounter of the 2 worlds.
13:30 pm approx. Main staging on the esplanade of Saqsayhuaman: Lasting 90 minutes, where the rites of the New Fire, the Coca, the offerings of the Four Suyos, and the prediction of future times are celebrated.
16:30 pm approx. Return to the hotel in tourist transport.
