Travel Itinerary

The Lares Trek is an excellent alternative to the Inca Trail that will allow you to immerse yourself in authentic Andean culture. Along the route, you will visit local communities, learn about their traditions, enjoy relaxing hot springs, and culminate your experience with a magical visit to Machu Picchu.

1

Day 1: Cusco - Lares - Huaca Wasi

We pick you up from your hotel at 6 in the morning to start the beautiful journey towards Lares. We will pass through the towns of Calca and then visit the Humanmarca archaeological complex, a small pre-Inca citadel with spectacular terraces, temples, and Inca streets. We continue to the Lares Valley where you will have your first breakfast accompanied by incredible views of the Andes mountain range.

You can enjoy the hot springs composed of purely volcanic water, ranging from cold to boiling, very good for bones, stress, muscles, and headaches. After lunch, we will meet our muleteers and horses.

We will begin a 3-hour hike during which the guide will explain textiles, livestock, agriculture, and medicinal plants. On this hike, we can see many alpacas, vicuñas, and beautiful decorations in Andean houses. We arrive at the Huaca Wasi campsite (3770 m.a.s.l). If there is time, we will visit the local school; you can bring school supplies if you wish. Finally, we will have dinner and rest.

Day 2: Huaca Wasi - Huaca Punku - Mantanay - Yanahuara

You will wake up at approximately 6 in the morning with our coca tea service. After breakfast, we will continue hiking for 3 hours to Huacarpunku, where we will observe an impressive waterfall. You will see lakes, llamas, and alpacas (we have an emergency horse in case you are tired).

We will begin our descent to the lunch spot passing by two lagoons: the first, Auro Q'ocha, to see local birds, and the second, Yurac Q'ocha (3600 m.a.s.l), where you will enjoy lunch. We will descend through a Q'euña forest with fantastic views of the valley until we reach YANAHUARA (3400 m.a.s.l), where our tents await us.

Day 3: Yanahuara - Yanahuara Viewpoint - Ollantaytambo

We wake up at approximately 7 in the morning. After breakfast, we continue walking downhill. Along the trail, we will be able to see the preparation of chicha, pass by fruit trees, and notice the changes in microclimate. Farms in this area grow corn, quinoa, kiwi, peaches, avocados, among others.

We continue with the ascent to the Yanahuara viewpoint to observe the impressive Sacred Valley. We will descend for lunch and then board the bus that will transfer us to Ollantaytambo. There we will take the 12:58 pm train to the town of Aguas Calientes (2-hour trip).

Day 4: Machu Picchu - Ollantaytambo - Cusco

The most magical day, because we will finally visit Machu Picchu. We will wake up very early to take the first buses (5:30 am). Our guide will give us a 2-hour explanation in the Inca citadel. Afterwards, you will have time to explore on your own and take photographs.

In the afternoon, we will take the train back to Ollantaytambo, followed by a bus that will take you back to your hotel in Cusco.
