The Complete Gran Vilaya Expedition

A challenging and rewarding 4-day expedition through the Gran Vilaya Valley. We will explore the Karajía Sarcophagi before diving into dense cloud forests, ancient trails, and hidden ruins, culminating at the mighty Kuelap Fortress.

1

Day 1: Chachapoyas - Karajía - Huaylla Belén

08:00 a.m. Departure from Chachapoyas towards the Cruz Pata community. From here, we walk for about 45 minutes to visit the Karajía Sarcophagi, unique anthropomorphic tombs perched on a cliff.

After the visit and lunch, our transportation takes us to the spectacular Huaylla Belén valley.

We set up our first camp and enjoy dinner surrounded by an impressive landscape.

2

Day 2: Huaylla Belén - Pirquilla - Congon

Following a nutritious breakfast, we start our hike through the cloud forest, observing orchids, bromeliads, and potentially birds like the Andean cock-of-the-rock.

We will hike for approximately 6 to 7 hours, passing through the archaeological remains of Pirquilla, mostly covered by dense vegetation.

We descend to the community of Congon, where we will have dinner and spend the night in a basic hostel or campsite.

Day 3: Congon - Lanche Pass - Yumal

Today is a challenging day. We start with a steep ascent for about 4 hours to the Lanche pass, at approximately 3,200 meters above sea level.

The effort is rewarded with panoramic views of the Andes and the Marañón River valley.

After lunch on the trail, we continue our hike to the community of Yumal.

Dinner and overnight stay in a rural hostel in Yumal.

4

Day 4: Yumal - Kuelap - Chachapoyas

We wake up early and hike for about 2 hours to reach the Kuelap Fortress.

Enjoy a guided tour of this impressive archaeological site, built by the Chachapoyas on a mountaintop.
