The Mystery of the Mummies
An extreme expedition for true adventurers. We will hike through dense cloud forests and muddy trails to reach the remote Laguna de los Cóndores, where hundreds of Chachapoyas mummies were discovered on cliffs overlooking the dark waters.
Day 1: Chachapoyas - Leymebamba - Laguna de los Cóndores
06:00 a.m. Departure from Chachapoyas to the town of Leymebamba (approx 2 hours).
In Leymebamba, we meet our local guides and muleteers. After breakfast, we start our demanding hike.
The trek takes between 8 and 10 hours, crossing mud trails, paramo ecosystems, and cloud forests, reaching altitudes over 3,500 masl.
Late arrival at the rustic cabin next to the Laguna de los Cóndores for dinner and rest.
Day 2: Exploration of the Mausoleums and Lagoon
After breakfast, we board a rowboat to cross the dark waters of the lagoon.
We disembark and hike through thick vegetation for about 1 hour to reach the cliffs where the Chachapoyas mausoleums are located.
We will observe the tombs, some still containing remains and offerings, while our guide explains the history and discovery of the site.
Return to the cabin for lunch. Afternoon free to fish or rest. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Return to Leymebamba - Chachapoyas
Early breakfast to begin the long hike back to Leymebamba (8 to 9 hours).
Upon arriving in Leymebamba, we will visit the impressive Mallqui Center Museum, which houses the mummies rescued from the lagoon.
After the visit, our transportation will take us back to Chachapoyas, arriving around 8:00 p.m.
